EVN Macedonia Steering Board chairman Georg Waldner and UNDP representative to Macedonia Ann-Marie Ali, in the attendance of Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Nexhati Jakupi, signed Wednesday a Memorandum on Cooperation in implementation of project "Mitigation of Climate Change through Improvement of Energy Efficiency in Construction Sector".

The project's main objective is capacity building of local authorities in the field of energy efficiency, supporting municipalities in implementing the directive on energy in buildings.

According to Minister Jakupi, the project would mitigate one of the largest problems municipalities cope with - efficient energy use.

"This approach will contribute to the global efforts for reduction of climate change, guided by the fact that the construction sector at a global level is of highest potential in the lessening of climate change through introduction of energy efficiency measures and rational energy use", stated Jakupi.

UNDP official Ali stressed the memo would enable the adoption of sound policies and implementation of local energy saving measures.

"We hope this will result in a change in the way of using household electricity", added Ali.

EVN Macedonia representative Waldner expressed hope that increase of energy efficiency in local self-governments would contribute towards the general reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in Macedonia.

The project is implemented by UNDP with EVN's technical support, in cooperation with the Association of Local Self-Government Units (ZELS), funded by the Austrian Development Agency.
