Bulgarian construction company Siconco and German peer Hochtief will redevelop the decommissioned military installations in Simitli and Razgrad into industrial zones, said the Bulgarian regional development ministry.

The two contractors for the Phare-funded project were selected among 33 candidates from Greece, Ireland, Spain, Italy and Bulgaria.

Siconco was tapped for the 2 mln euro conversion of the military base in Razgrad, North-eastern Bulgaria, while Hochtief will develop the industrial zone in Simitli, South-western Bulgaria, at a cost of EUR 2.3 mln.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2007 after the 2-month design stage of the projects is completed.

The contractors will demolish some of the existing buildings and renovate the remainder. The electricity, water supply and sewerage infrastructure will also be upgraded. The roads leading in and out of the future industrial zones will be reconstructed or built from scratch if needed. The industrial zone in Razgrad will also have a gas distribution network.
