ROMANIA: Justice Minister Says Romania Losing Will to Fight Corruption

Justice Minister Monica Macovei warned that Romania is losing its will to fight corruption. In the interview with the Brussels-based web publication EU Observer, she complained that political support for reforming the judiciary is disappearing and that officials are dragging their feet in establishing an independent panel, the Agency for Integrity, to watch for conflicts of interest. The bill on the Integrity Agency was submitted to parliament in April but has yet to be adopted.

SLOVENIA: Almunia Congratulates Slovenia on Smooth Euro Changeover

European Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia congratulated Slovenia on Monday for successfully adopting the euro and urged consumers to be diligent during the changeover to the new currency.

"This is an important day for Slovenia, which becomes the first country of the 2004 EU enlargement to adopt the euro. I want to congratulate the Slovenian authorities and all the people involved in the changeover operation," Almunia wrote in a press release.
